A landlord in Changsha, Hunan Province, was forced to spend 500 to 600 yuan (approximately RM295 to RM355) on cleaning after two tenants moved out, leaving behind piles of rubbish throughout the rented property.
According to local media, the incident came to light on July 15 when the landlord’s friend, identified only as Mr Zhang, entered the flat after the tenants had vacated.
He discovered rubbish scattered across the living room, kitchen and bathroom, with takeaway food containers and plastic bags covering the floors. In one bedroom, the pile of waste had grown higher than the bed, while a strong foul smell filled the apartment.
Mr Zhang told reporters that the tenants, a man and a woman both born in the 2000s, first signed a one-year tenancy agreement in November 2024. They continued renting the property after November 2025, although no new written agreement was signed.
The monthly rent was 2,600 yuan (approximately RM1,535).
Mr Zhang said he only discovered the condition of the property after the tenants had fallen behind on their rent by more than a week. He eventually hired professional cleaners, who spent four to five hours clearing the flat.
The incident has sparked discussion on social media about tenants’ responsibilities in maintaining rental properties before moving out.
