Massive Blaze Forces 1,700 Evacuated At Caribbean Holiday Resort

Date:

A tourist has died and thousands were forced to evacuate after a massive fire swept through a luxury holiday resort in the Dominican Republic.

The blaze broke out at the Viva Dominicus Bayahibe resort, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky as emergency services rushed to contain the rapidly spreading flames.

Authorities confirmed that the victim was an Italian tourist, 46-year-old Francesca Valentino, who was on the beach when the fire started. At least nine others were injured, with three requiring hospital treatment while the remaining victims were treated at the scene.

Around 1,700 guests were evacuated as the fire intensified, with hotel staff and emergency responders working together to move tourists to safe areas, including nearby beach zones.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as firefighters struggled to control the blaze, with some claiming the fire had grown too large for initial resources to manage effectively.

Officials believe strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, particularly through flammable palm roofing structures within the resort.

Footage circulating on social media showed huge clouds of smoke, flames engulfing buildings, and tourists standing in shallow water as the fire raged nearby.

The blaze has since been brought under control, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and assess the extent of the damage.
