A freight train crash in Munich has left one person in critical condition after two trains collided in the early hours of Saturday, sending carriages plunging off a bridge onto a road below.
The incident happened at around 1.40am during shunting operations on a railway overpass in the Milbertshofen area along Schleißheimer Straße, according to German police.
Authorities said the impact of the collision caused one of the freight trains to be pushed off the bridge, with several carriages crashing onto the road beneath and scattering debris across the area.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where firefighters, police and paramedics worked to secure the site and assist those affected. Officials confirmed that the freight wagons involved were empty at the time of the crash.
A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson said the section of track involved is used exclusively for freight operations, while investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the collision.
The road under the bridge remains closed as recovery and clearance work continues, with authorities warning that operations could stretch into the weekend as crews remove damaged carriages and debris.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over rail safety in Europe, following several recent train accidents that have raised questions about operational procedures and infrastructure management.
Further updates are expected as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
