Renovation Worker Discovers Massive 24-Layer Wasp Nest Hidden Inside Apartment Wall

Date:

A renovation worker in Hebei, China, was left stunned after uncovering a massive multi-layered wasp nest hidden inside the kitchen wall of an apartment undergoing renovations.

The discovery was made on 20 July in Langfang when the worker, identified only as Mr Wang, was cutting a small channel into the kitchen wall of an unfinished unit on the 11th floor of a residential building.

After spotting what appeared to be part of a wasp nest, Mr Wang widened the opening and was amazed to find a giant barrel-shaped structure made up of 24 interconnected layers stacked vertically inside the wall cavity.

According to Mr Wang, the individual nest layers varied in size, with the largest measuring roughly the size of a human palm and the smallest about the size of a fist. He believes the wasps entered the wall through gaps around the building’s kitchen exhaust flue before constructing the elaborate nest.

Despite its impressive size, the nest had completely dried out and was abandoned. Mr Wang said there were no wasps, larvae or pupae remaining inside, indicating it had been deserted for quite some time.

Describing the unusual find as both spectacular and rare, he said the entire nest was carefully removed and preserved after the discovery, with its towering multi-layered structure drawing attention for its remarkable appearance.
