Two Rohingya men were arrested after attempting to flee from a police inspection by making a U-turn before their vehicle crashed into a lorry at Kilometer 9, Jalan Gua Musang–Kuala Lipis, on Tuesday.
The suspects, aged 36 and 32, were caught after the Proton Preve they were travelling in lost control and collided with a lorry at about 11am.
Gua Musang District Police Chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the incident occurred when police personnel were conducting random checks under Ops Tapis Bersepadu.
He said the suspects attempted to escape upon approaching the inspection point, prompting police to give chase with assistance from officers from Bertam Police Station.
“The vehicle eventually skidded and crashed into a lorry at Kampung Kuala Lah near the Jerek-Meranto junction, allowing both suspects to be detained,” he said in a statement.
A further inspection of the vehicle uncovered a sling bag containing plastic packets filled with 6,000 pills believed to be methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘pil kuda’, with an estimated value of RM60,000.
Police also seized the Proton Preve, five mobile phones, a car key and a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card during the operation.
Sik said initial investigations found that only one UNHCR card was discovered, while both suspects admitted to owning the drugs. Urine screening tests also showed that both men tested positive for methamphetamine.
One of the suspects was found to have a previous record under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties upon conviction, as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Police are continuing investigations to identify the drug distribution network and other individuals believed to be involved.
