A two-year-old girl was killed after she was struck by a car while playing with her sister near her home in Gurugram, northern India.
The incident happened at around 9pm on Sept 7, when toddler Adrija was crouching near the roadside as her mother stood nearby talking to a friend.
Footage from the incident reportedly shows a car approaching a bend before suddenly veering towards the children. Adrija was then struck and trapped beneath the vehicle.
Her mother immediately rushed to her aid after the collision, but the toddler was unresponsive.
Adrija was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to her father, Virendra Tiwari, the driver had passed the same spot around five minutes earlier and narrowly avoided hitting the children after his wife pulled them out of the way.
He alleged that the driver knew children were near the turning but was still speeding when he returned moments later.
“He knew there were children at the turning, but even then he was speeding when he crossed the spot for the second time,” Virendra said.
The driver reportedly stopped after the crash and attempted to help. He was later arrested, while police seized the vehicle.
Gurugram Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said the suspect, a 30-year-old man who works for a private company, had been arrested.
Police registered a case against him on Sept 8 at Sector 5 police station for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
According to police, the driver told investigators that he did not see the children on the road because it was dark.
The family, originally from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, had been living in Gurugram for several years.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
