Heavy rain that lashed the capital on Wednesday caused several areas of Zoo Negara to be flooded, raising concerns among the public over the safety of the animals.
Zoo Negara deputy president Datuk Rosly Lana shared a video of the situation on TikTok, showing several parts of the zoo submerged in murky floodwater.
The footage showed water covering pathways and areas surrounding animal enclosures, while the water level in a hippopotamus enclosure had also risen, with the animal seen partially submerged.
Several individuals believed to be zoo staff were also seen wading through flooded areas as rain continued to fall.
“Conditions at Zoo Negara following heavy rain that caused flooding at the zoo.
“Many thanks to the Gombak Volunteer Fire Brigade for always responding quickly to provide assistance. Stay safe, everyone,” Rosly said in his post.
In the comments section, Rosly confirmed that all the animals at the zoo were safe.
The video drew widespread attention on TikTok, with users expressing concern over the condition of the animals.
“Feel sorry for the animals that are being submerged. Thank you to everyone helping Zoo Negara,” one user, Ayda, commented.
Another user, Nur Dinda, asked about the safety of “Oyen”, saying: “Is Oyen safe? Hopefully he was rescued during the flood.”
A user named Arif also pointed out that this was allegedly not the first time Zoo Negara had been flooded, suggesting that relocation could be considered as development continues around the area.
