16 Law Students Suspended Over Sexual Harassment Scandal At Indonesian University

Date:

A leading university in Indonesia has suspended 16 law students over allegations of sexual harassment, in a case that has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over campus safety.

The incident, involving students from Universitas Indonesia, quickly went viral and drew strong public reaction after details emerged online. Reports from local media indicated that around 20 students and seven female lecturers were targeted with explicit and inappropriate content shared within a chat group.

Screenshots of the obscene conversations began circulating on X late last week, fuelling anger among netizens and prompting calls for firm action. The case highlights the growing impact of digital platforms in exposing misconduct within academic institutions.

All individuals involved have been suspended effective Wednesday until May 30. During this period, they are barred from participating in any academic activities, including attending lectures, as investigations continue.

In response, Brian Yuliarto stressed that universities must ensure a safe and respectful environment, free from any form of misconduct. His remarks reflect increasing pressure on institutions to take decisive action in handling such cases.

In a recent development, the accused students appeared at a campus auditorium to issue a public apology after facing mounting pressure from fellow Universitas Indonesia students. The move, however, has done little to quell public anger surrounding the incident.

Data from Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pembelajaran Indonesia (JPPI) recorded approximately 233 cases of violence across schools, universities, and other institutions this year, with nearly half involving sexual assault. The figures underscore the broader issue of harassment within educational environments across the country.
