A 22-year-old woman has pleaded guilty at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court to culpable homicide not amounting to murder after causing the death of one of her newborn twin daughters in a tragic incident last month.
Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin entered the guilty plea before Judge Zamir Suhaimee after the charge was read out in court.
According to the charge sheet, the unmarried woman was accused of causing the death of the infant by committing an act with the intention of inflicting bodily injury likely to result in death.
The incident allegedly took place at the parking area of a People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flat in Taman Sutera Utama, Johor Bahru, between 11am and 2.30pm on May 20.
Court documents stated that the baby girl died after being thrown from the 10th floor of the apartment block.
Nuran Batrisya was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor R Nevina, while the accused appeared in court without legal representation.
During proceedings, the prosecution did not offer bail, noting that the offence is generally non-bailable, and requested additional time to prepare the facts of the case as well as sentencing submissions.
In mitigation, Nuran Batrisya appealed to the court for bail, telling the judge that she needed to care for her surviving newborn child, the victim’s twin sister.
After considering the application, the court allowed bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties.
The judge also ordered the accused to surrender her passport, report to a nearby police station once a month and refrain from contacting or interfering with prosecution witnesses.
The court fixed July 3 for sentencing and for the presentation of the full facts of the case.
The tragic incident shocked the local community and drew widespread attention due to the circumstances surrounding the death of the newborn infant.
