A durian seller in Kampung Bukit Tunggal has drawn huge crowds after managing to sell 3,000kg of durians within just five minutes, with prices starting as low as RM1 per kilogramme during a special promotion.
Business owner Muhammad Izhar Ibrahim, 27, said the rapid sales reflected strong public response to his ongoing initiative aimed at making the “king of fruits” more accessible, especially for lower-income families. He added that he regularly sells more than a tonne of durian a day as part of the campaign.
He explained that the promotion features a wide range of durian varieties, including kampung durian, IOI, Udang Merah, D24 and Musang King, offered in different grades and sizes. While the lower-priced fruits are smaller in size, he stressed that the quality remains satisfactory for customers.
In a broader sense, he said the initiative is intended as a gesture of appreciation to customers while also allowing more people to enjoy durian without financial strain. According to him, demand has remained strong, with many customers returning after their initial purchase.
He revealed that customers often begin queuing as early as 8am to secure the heavily discounted fruits, highlighting the popularity of the promotion. The durians are mainly sourced from surplus harvests in Pahang and Johor, where production has been particularly high this season.
Muhammad Izhar noted that durian yields across several states, including Perak, Johor and Pahang, have been exceptionally abundant this year, contributing to lower market prices. He added that even premium varieties such as Grade A Musang King are now available at significantly reduced rates compared to usual market value.
He also mentioned that durian supply from Terengganu is expected to increase in the coming weeks, which could further boost availability. Overall, he said the current season has created a rare opportunity for consumers to enjoy high-quality durians at more affordable prices.
