38-Year-Old Fisherman Discovered Lifeless In River Near Kemaman

Date:

The body of a 38-year-old man was discovered floating near a bridge at Sungai Air Puteh in Kampung Seberang Tayor, here, yesterday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Mualim Johari, was found at about 6pm in the river located roughly one kilometre from his home, sparking concern among nearby residents.

He was understood to be living alone and earning a living by selling smoked river fish, according to information gathered from the local community.

Preliminary accounts suggest that the incident may have occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the man went to the river to set fishing nets but is believed to have fallen into the water before being swept away by strong currents.

Such incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by river activities, especially in areas where currents can change rapidly without warning.

His body was later found caught on a pile of logs in the middle of the river by villagers who alerted authorities immediately.

Police and fire and rescue personnel from the Bandar Baru Cheneh Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene to recover the remains before transporting them to the Forensic Unit of Kemaman Hospital for further examination.

Kemaman District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli confirmed receiving reports regarding the discovery and said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Authorities continue to remind the public to exercise caution when engaging in river-related activities, particularly during unpredictable weather and strong water flow conditions.
