A lawyer has lodged a police report urging authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into an incident involving a Form Two female student who allegedly fell at a school in Papar, Sabah, raising fresh concerns over school safety.
Datuk Ram Singh said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) should conduct a transparent, independent and comprehensive investigation to determine whether negligence, inadequate safety measures, failure of duty or any other contributing factors were involved in the incident. School safety remains a major public concern, particularly when similar incidents occur at the same institution within a relatively short period.
In the police report, Ram explained that he decided to take the matter to the authorities after reading media reports about the incident and reviewing a statement issued by the Sabah State Education Department (JPN), which confirmed that the student was in stable condition after receiving treatment at a hospital.
He also claimed to have received information from other sources alleging that the student suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, and had reportedly left behind a suicide note.
“In light of this information, I urge both the police and the Sabah State Education Department to investigate the matter thoroughly,” he said in the report.
The police report was lodged at the Luyang Police Station on Sunday.
Ram pointed out that the latest incident occurred about a year after the death of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, which was also alleged to have taken place at the same school and is currently the subject of an ongoing inquest.
According to him, the latest case has once again raised public concern over student safety, school supervision, administrative management and the condition of the school’s physical facilities.
“During the opening of the inquest, numerous questions were raised regarding safety measures at the same school, including precautionary procedures, fencing and safety briefings or reminders given to students.
“Now, another student has fallen. This is deeply disappointing and raises serious concerns that something may be fundamentally wrong,” he said.
Ram has called on the police to obtain all relevant closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, record statements from witnesses, examine the school’s existing safety procedures and assess whether adequate supervision of students was in place.
He also urged the authorities to take appropriate legal action if investigations uncover evidence of negligence or any offences under existing laws.
Ram added that his statement was recorded by the police when he lodged the report, expressing hope that the investigation would provide clear answers and reassure the public that every possible step is being taken to safeguard students.
