Bangladeshi Man Arrested After Woman Allegedly Sexually Assaulted On LRT

A Bangladeshi man has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while travelling on a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train near the Setiawangsa station last Tuesday.

Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Khairul Anuar Khalid said the incident occurred at around 8.30am while the 25-year-old victim was travelling from Wangsa Maju station towards Pasar Seni station.

“When the train passed Setiawangsa LRT station, the victim noticed a man rubbing his genitals against the back of her body,” he said in a statement today.

The suspect, a 43-year-old Bangladeshi national, was arrested by Prasarana auxiliary police at Pasar Seni LRT station at around 11.30am last Friday.

He was subsequently handed over to the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters Criminal Investigation Division for further investigation.

Khairul Anuar said the suspect was remanded for four days from Saturday until tomorrow to assist with investigations into the alleged offence.

The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which covers assault or use of criminal force against a person with intent to outrage modesty.

If convicted, the offence carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine, whipping, or any two of those punishments.

Police are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
