Businessman Remanded Over Fake Pahang Palace Letter Scam

Date:

A businessman holding the title of ‘Datuk’ and his assistant have been remanded for four days to assist investigations into an alleged fraud case involving fake documents bearing the royal crest of Pahang Crown Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Ellyna Othman after police submitted the application at the Kuantan Magistrate’s Court today.

Acting Pahang Police Chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said both suspects, aged 45, were arrested at a house in Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, at about 11am yesterday.

He said the arrests were made after the Pahang Palace detected several fake documents using the royal crest and letterhead of the Tengku Mahkota Pahang Unit on July 8.

“The fake letters also carried the name and signature of a senior officer from the Pahang Council of the Royal Court (MKP) without authorisation.

“The documents came to light after a businessman approached the officer and submitted the letters for verification,” he said.

Azry said the businessman claimed he received the documents from a man with the title of ‘Datuk’, who allegedly presented the letters as an offer and endorsement for an appointment purportedly approved by Tengku Mahkota Pahang.

Following the discovery, the MKP senior officer referred the matter to Tengku Hassanal, who instructed that a police report be lodged as the case involved misuse of the official identity of the Pahang Palace.

Azry said police are investigating the motive behind the issuance of the fake documents as well as the amount of losses involved in the case.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 and Section 468 of the Penal Code for cheating and forgery, which carry a maximum imprisonment term of 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
