A police constable has been detained to assist investigations into the discovery of drugs worth more than RM18,000 at the Lumut Police Station lock-up in Manjung on Tuesday.
The officer, who is in his 30s, was detained following an inspection conducted by Manjung district police headquarters at about 8.30am.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the inspection also led to the detention of two men, who were remanded persons, after various types of drugs were found.
“The seizure comprised 16 plastic tube packets containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 109.54 grammes, 16 packets of heroin weighing 110.37 grammes and 23 packets of dried leaves believed to be cannabis weighing 142.31 grammes.
“The total value of the seized drugs is estimated at RM18,534,” he said at a press conference during the Perak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department’s 2026 Drug and Ketum Case Items Disposal Ceremony at the Perak police contingent headquarters on Thursday.
Mohd Alwi said checks found that the constable, who was stationed at Lumut Police Station, had no previous disciplinary or criminal record and tested negative for drugs.
He said police were conducting a thorough investigation to establish how the prohibited substances were brought into the lock-up.
“The investigation will be conducted transparently and comprehensively to ensure appropriate action is taken based on the facts and evidence obtained,” he said.
Meanwhile, initial urine screening found that the two remanded men, both aged in their 40s, tested positive for methamphetamine.
All those detained have been remanded for seven days until Aug 18 to assist investigations under Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Mohd Alwi stressed that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) takes all forms of drug abuse and trafficking seriously, particularly when such activities involve police premises or personnel.
