Cops Investigate Defamation Claims Tied to Perlis Royal Institution on Facebook

Date:

Police have received a report over a Facebook post alleged to contain defamatory statements and accusations involving an individual linked to the Perlis Royal Institution.

Arau district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the report was lodged yesterday by a 39-year-old contractor who came across the post while at a restaurant in Arau at about 8.30pm on Dec 31.

According to police statements, the complainant said he had not previously seen the post, although he had heard rumours related to the alleged slander and had chosen to ignore them until reading the post himself.

The Facebook post reportedly accused an individual of being the mastermind behind the removal of former Perlis menteri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, allegedly due to disagreements over the value involved in the procurement of the Perlis state piping system project, which was claimed to have been “requested” by a certain party.

Ahmad Mohsin said the contractor believed the post was aimed at tarnishing the Perlis Royal Institution and urged police to investigate the account owner for allegedly attempting to embarrass, undermine and bring disrepute to the institution.

Checks through the Integrated Police Reporting System (iPRS) revealed that two police reports have been lodged, including one in Kangar, which has since been classified as referring to the original report filed in Arau.

Police are currently tracing the owner of the Facebook account involved. The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
