Nearly half of the roof at Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian’s family home was blown away during a spell of heavy rain and strong winds that swept through several parts of Kuching on Thursday.
The incident happened at around 5pm, when severe weather conditions affected the city and surrounding areas.
Dr Sim, who was in Bintulu attending a meeting at the time, said his wife was alone at their home when the roof was damaged.
He said his wife attempted to contact him during the incident, but he did not notice the call as his mobile phone was on silent mode.
“I tried calling my wife back but there was no answer. Then my son told me that the wind had blown off the roof of our house.
“I was very worried about my wife’s safety, but I was later informed that she was safe,” he told reporters.
Dr Sim subsequently returned to Kuching by air, arriving at about 7.45pm.
He said his family continued staying at the house while repair work was carried out on the damaged section of the roof.
Sarawak Energy Berhad personnel were also deployed to the residence to check the safety of the electricity supply and electrical installations following the damage.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng visited Dr Sim’s home after the incident and inspected several other residences that were also affected by the strong winds.
The storm caused damage in several parts of Kuching, with emergency teams and authorities attending to reports of fallen trees and affected properties as residents dealt with the aftermath of the bad weather.
