Driver Fined After Being Caught Transporting Football Goal On Car Roof

Date:

A motorist has been fined after being caught on camera driving with a football goal precariously balanced on the roof of his vehicle in Hertfordshire.

Dashcam footage released by Hertfordshire Constabulary shows the driver pulling out at a junction in Borehamwood with the metal football frame wobbling on top of the car before police intervened.

Officers activated their emergency lights and stopped the vehicle after noticing the unsecured load, which police said could have posed a serious danger to other road users.

Authorities later described the incident as an “own goal”, warning that the load was not properly secured and could have easily caused a collision if it had fallen onto the road.

Police reminded motorists that driving with an insecure load is illegal in the UK and, in serious cases, can result in court action or even imprisonment.

The driver, who was stopped on May 12, 2025, later appeared in court where he was issued three penalty points on his licence, a £120 fine, and a £48 victim surcharge.

Police said the case highlighted the importance of properly securing items during transport, advising drivers to dismantle large objects and store heavy items safely inside the vehicle where possible.

The incident, shared by Hertfordshire police on social media, sparked online reactions, with many users criticising the driver’s lack of judgement while others joked about the unusual nature of the offence.
