Fire Destroys 60% Of Pos Laju Building In Bekenu

Date:

About 60 per cent of a Pos Laju building in Bekenu, around 47km south-west of Miri, Sarawak, was destroyed in a fire this morning.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said its Operations Centre received an emergency call at 8.44am before a team of five firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station was sent to the location.

Led by Senior Fire Officer II Azalan Azaman, the firefighters arrived at about 9.30am and found the building, measuring approximately 15.2 metres by 12.2 metres, engulfed in flames.

Initial checks found that an estimated 60 per cent of the permanent structure had been damaged or destroyed by the blaze.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Firefighters used a hose line measuring about 122 metres, fitted with two nozzles, to contain the fire. Water was also drawn from an open source during the operation.

The blaze was brought under control at around 9.58am, although firefighters remained at the scene to carry out mopping-up and follow-up operations.

A Compact Rescue Tender and five firefighters were involved in the firefighting effort.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire or the total value of property and equipment lost in the incident.
