A Form One student was allegedly choked by a fellow schoolmate following a dispute over seating arrangements at a school canteen in Cheras earlier this year.
Cheras District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Rosdi Daud confirmed that police received a report regarding the incident involving two male students on April 16.
Investigations revealed that the altercation took place in front of the school’s cooperative store and stemmed from a disagreement over a seat in the canteen.
According to Rosdi, the suspect, who is also a Form One student, allegedly grabbed the victim from behind and choked him during the confrontation.
“The suspect acted by choking the victim’s neck from behind and also verbally provoked the victim during the incident,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Following the incident, the victim was referred to the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) in Cheras for medical treatment on the same day.
Rosdi said the school subsequently took disciplinary action against the student involved after a meeting involving police officers, school management and the students’ guardians was held on April 20.
As a result of the meeting, the student accused of carrying out the act was issued a formal warning and suspended from school by the management.
Police have urged the public not to speculate on the case or circulate unverified information that could interfere with investigations.
Authorities also advised all parties to allow the relevant agencies to handle the matter through the proper channels.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over student behaviour and school discipline, with authorities stressing the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully within the school environment.
