Four cars parked in a bushy area near the traffic lights at Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jelutong, were damaged in a fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred at about 1.35am. The fire was swiftly brought under control, preventing it from spreading further to the surrounding area.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Fire Operations and Rescue, John Sagun Francis, said firefighters from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched immediately after receiving an emergency call.
Fire crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and discovered four parked vehicles engulfed in flames. The blaze was successfully contained at 1.43am before being completely extinguished seven minutes later. Firefighters then carried out overhaul operations to eliminate any remaining hotspots that could reignite the fire.
The operation concluded at 2.26am. The affected vehicles comprised a Hyundai, which sustained about 30 per cent damage to its rear boot, a Proton X50 with approximately 40 per cent damage to its engine compartment, a Perodua Viva that suffered around 50 per cent damage to its rear section, and an Audi with about 30 per cent damage to its rear bonnet.
John said inspections at the scene also revealed that the Proton X50 and Perodua Viva did not have registration plates, while the identities of all four vehicle owners have yet to be established.
The case has since been handed over to the JBPM Fire Investigation Unit to determine the cause of the blaze and whether any other factors contributed to the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
