Four Motorcyclists Killed After 12 Bikes Collide On East Coast Expressway

Date:

Four Yamaha RX-Z motorcycle riders were killed in a crash involving 12 motorcycles and a car along the East Coast Expressway (LPT) heading towards Kemaman early Saturday morning.

Kuantan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ashari Abu Samah said the accident occurred at about 1.20am at Kilometer 246.4 of the highway.

He said three victims, identified as Che Mohd Sufian Che Ghani, 40, Muhammad Hafiz Al Hakim Mazlan, 33, and Mohd Aizat Husni, 33, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Another rider, Muhammad Safawi Md Noh, 24, later died while receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA).

Ashari said a 13-year-old passenger in a Toyota Vios, Nur Irish Adelia Aziz, suffered a neck injury and was taken to HTAA for further treatment, while the car driver, Muhammad Irfan Aziz, 25, escaped unharmed.

He added that details of the remaining eight motorcycle riders involved in the crash had yet to be confirmed.

Preliminary investigations found that the Toyota Vios was travelling from Kuantan towards Kemaman when the incident occurred. The vehicle was believed to have been travelling straight in the right lane before a motorcycle suddenly collided with its rear section.

Following the impact, the motorcycle rider was thrown onto the right lane, causing three other motorcycles behind to crash into each other after failing to avoid the fallen rider.

Ashari said three riders died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at HTAA.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
