A 63-year-old housewife lost RM87,975.04 after falling victim to a fake investment scheme that promised returns of RM25,000 within four hours from an initial investment of just RM450.
The elderly woman even pawned her jewellery to raise money to participate in the fraudulent scheme.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the victim was initially attracted to an investment advertisement she came across on Facebook at around 10am on October 3.
“She clicked on the link provided and was subsequently contacted by two unidentified individuals via WhatsApp, who claimed to be consultants for the investment scheme,” he said.
Azli said the woman became increasingly interested after being told she could earn RM25,000 within four hours with an initial capital of only RM450.
The victim proceeded to invest RM450 before making additional payments for purported processing costs, legal fees and a fee allegedly required for the investment scheme’s chief executive officer to sign documents.
“She was also instructed to make payments for an alleged error involving her transaction authorisation code (TAC) on six separate occasions before finally realising she had been scammed,” he said.
