Illegal Electricity Ring Busted In Joint Sabah Enforcement Operation

Date:

Four foreign nationals have been arrested for allegedly operating a syndicate involved in stealing and illegally distributing electricity to homes in squatter settlements.

The suspects were detained during a three-day joint operation led by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), which carried out enforcement activities across several squatter areas beginning last Wednesday.

ECoS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said investigations revealed that the syndicate charged between RM50 and RM100 per household for illegal electricity connections.

He said the suspects are being investigated under multiple provisions of the Sabah Electricity Supply Enactment 2024, which carry penalties of up to RM1 million in fines, 10 years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.

Authorities said the operation involved 80 officers from various agencies, including ECoS, Sabah Electricity (SE), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Immigration Department and the Sabah Water Department.

In a separate outcome of the operation, 35 additional cases involving 26 foreign nationals and nine locals are also being investigated for illegal electricity theft.

Officials said the cases will be brought to court once investigations are completed.

ECoS added that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified, as illegal electricity connections not only violate the law but also pose serious safety risks such as electrocution and fire hazards.

The utility company is also implementing a “meter house” initiative to reduce illegal connections and improve safety, while authorities continue coordinated efforts to curb electricity theft in Sabah.
