Johor To Form Special Committee On School Safety After Fatal Van Accident

Date:

Johor will establish a special committee to review school safety measures following the death of a Year Two pupil who was struck by a van outside a school in Batu Pahat on Tuesday.

State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the committee will examine the cause of the incident while also strengthening existing safety guidelines and coordinating improvements at the state level.

He added that the initiative will support the ongoing “Safe School Campaign”, which covers not only road safety but also the overall well-being and protection of students within school premises.

The committee will also work with the District Education Office (PPD) to tighten control over vehicles entering and exiting school compounds, ensuring strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Aznan stressed that all vehicles must be registered at school security posts and adhere to established rules to reduce risks and prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

He noted that school safety guidelines governing vehicle movement have been in place since 1999 and are regularly updated, with further enhancements expected under the upcoming campaign scheduled for launch next month.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department (JKM) will provide counselling support to the victim’s family and affected students to help them cope with trauma following the incident.

Aznan also said he would personally visit the victim’s family the following day.

The incident involved an eight-year-old girl who died after being hit by a van outside Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Maimon in Batu Pahat at about 12.30pm, as the vehicle was leaving the school compound after delivering goods.
