Kelantan Police Chief Suspended Amid RM500 Bribery Investigation

Date:

A police station chief in Kelantan has been temporarily suspended from duty while the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigates allegations that he accepted a RM500 bribe.

Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the officer, who holds the rank of Senior Sergeant Major, has been suspended to allow investigations to proceed without interference.

He said the Police Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) is also conducting a parallel disciplinary investigation alongside the MACC probe.

“The case is still under MACC investigation, so we will suspend him from duty first. At the same time, JIPS is carrying out disciplinary proceedings while the investigation continues,” he told reporters after the Kelantan police monthly assembly at the state police headquarters on Tuesday.

Mohd Yusoff said the suspension process is currently underway, with further action to depend on the outcome of the investigation.

The officer was previously remanded for seven days after the Kota Bharu Magistrate’s Court approved an application by the MACC on Monday.

The 41-year-old suspect is being investigated over allegations that he accepted RM500 from a foreign national in exchange for not taking enforcement action against the individual.

The foreign national is reportedly a holder of a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card.

The investigation is being conducted under the relevant provisions of Malaysian law, with authorities expected to determine whether further disciplinary or legal action will be taken once the probe is completed.
