Kemaman Stores Fined RM30K and RM9K for Selling Cigarettes Near School and to Teen

The Kemaman Magistrate’s Court yesterday fined a convenience store RM30,000 after it was found guilty of selling cigarettes near a school in the town.

The store manager, who was charged as the person-in-charge, pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Marsha Abdul Malik.

According to the charge, the premises sold tobacco products within 40 metres of a school fence on Jalan Jakar on April 14 at around 11 a.m.

The store was charged under Section 10(1) of the Control of Tobacco Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852).

Magistrate Marsha ordered the store to pay a fine of RM30,000, or serve seven months in prison if the fine is not settled.

The case was prosecuted by Ministry of Health officers Mohd Azman Mohd Ramli and Alias Awang Kechik.

In a separate case at the same court, another convenience store was fined RM9,000 after being found guilty of selling cigarettes to a 17-year-old.

The store representative pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read in court. According to the charge, the premises sold tobacco products to a minor at around 3 p.m. on September 29 last year at Binjai.

The store was charged under Section 13(1) of the Control of Tobacco Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which carries penalties under Section 13(2)(a)(i) of the same act.

Magistrate Marsha ordered the store to pay RM9,000, or serve six months in prison if the fine is not paid.

Both cases were handled by Ministry of Health prosecutors Mohd Azman Mohd Ramli and Alias Awang Kechik.
