The man who was previously kidnapped in a case involving a RM7 million ransom demand is believed to have been directly involved in a local drug trafficking syndicate, police revealed.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals and networks believed to be connected to the syndicate.
“Those who have been arrested by police are still being investigated, including efforts to trace other members involved. The victim is believed to have had direct involvement in a local drug distribution syndicate,” he said during a press conference at the Cheras District Police Headquarters.
Previously, reports stated that the 44-year-old victim was detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 after investigations uncovered elements of drug trafficking linked to the kidnapping case.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar had earlier said the victim was arrested by the NCID after joint investigations found evidence of his alleged involvement in the drug syndicate.
Police also arrested two other local men in their 30s who were suspected of being involved in the kidnapping case, including a former police officer who was dismissed in 2023 over a drug-related offence.
The kidnapping case was solved within less than 48 hours after police arrested six suspects comprising five men and one woman, all Malaysian citizens, aged between 30 and 46.
