The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji (TH), with a team of eight officers deployed to the institution’s headquarters to review relevant documents.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said the investigation followed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s instruction for enforcement agencies to take appropriate action based on issues highlighted in the recently released RCI report.
He said the investigation team began work by identifying documents related to matters raised in the report, as well as other issues that could be linked to the ongoing investigation.
“At this stage, we are also identifying individuals who will be called to provide statements. The list will be screened and classified before they are contacted according to the investigation process,” he said during a press conference in Putrajaya.
The Cabinet had previously agreed to declassify and publicly release the RCI report, while allowing further investigations by relevant enforcement agencies based on the findings.
The report contained 25 recommendations aimed at improving TH’s governance and operations. According to the findings, TH’s senior management has implemented 75 per cent of the recommendations, while the institution’s 3.5 per cent profit distribution for the 2025 financial year was highlighted as a sign of improved financial standing.
Following the report’s release, MACC established a special task force to examine the findings under provisions of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
In a statement, MACC said the task force would be led by Investigation Division senior director Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar and would look into possible offences involving corruption, criminal breach of trust, forgery of documents, abuse of power and money laundering.
Abd Halim said the investigation would not be restricted to any particular period and would instead focus on the issues, findings and recommendations outlined in the RCI report.
He added that the commission would obtain all necessary documents for review and analysis to determine whether any elements of wrongdoing, misconduct or abuse of power had occurred.
“Any documents required and related to the investigation will be obtained for examination and review to establish the outcome of the investigation,” he said.
When asked whether current and former TH leaders would be called for questioning, Abd Halim said individuals identified as relevant to the investigation would be contacted to have their statements recorded.
