Man Arrested After Alleged Obscene Gestures Towards Woman In Brickfields

Date:

A foreign national has been arrested by police on suspicion of committing indecent and harassing acts towards a woman at a coffee shop in Brickfields on Wednesday night.

Brickfields District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said the incident occurred at about 10pm when the victim, a 31-year-old company manager, was walking with a friend towards the premises.

According to police, the suspect, believed to be an Indian national, allegedly approached from the opposite direction and made obscene gestures towards the victim.

He is then said to have entered the same coffee shop and sat opposite the woman, where he allegedly stared at her and repeatedly winked while appearing to be intoxicated.

The behaviour reportedly caused discomfort to the victim, who later informed staff at the premises about the incident.

The woman subsequently lodged a police report after feeling threatened by the suspect’s actions, police said.

Witness statements have also supported the victim’s account, confirming that she was visibly distressed by the alleged harassment.

Acting on information received, police later arrested the suspect at a condominium in Jalan Berhala.

Authorities said further checks on the suspect’s identity will be carried out in cooperation with the Immigration Department.

Police also confirmed that an application for remand will be made to assist investigations under Section 509 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
