Police have arrested a 52-year-old man to assist in an investigation into a social media post allegedly containing insulting remarks and content deemed sensitive towards the Negeri Sembilan royal institution.
Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the suspect was arrested at about 1pm during a joint operation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at the Seremban District Police Headquarters.
Police also seized the suspect’s mobile phone to assist in the investigation.
The suspect is expected to be brought before the Seremban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a remand application.
According to Alzafny, the investigation was launched following a police report lodged with the Seremban District Police Headquarters on July 19 regarding a Threads post believed to contain remarks insulting and touching on the sensitivities of the Negeri Sembilan royal institution.
Preliminary investigations found that the post was uploaded on July 17, while the complainant only became aware of it the following day while at a restaurant in Senawang before lodging a police report.
The case is being investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Alzafny also reminded the public to use social media responsibly and refrain from creating, uploading or sharing content involving sensitive issues related to religion, race and the royal institution (3R), which could jeopardise public order.
