A 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed after crashing into the rear of a four-wheel-drive vehicle before his motorcycle caught fire on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) on Sunday.
The victim, Wan Amir Faiz Jamal Paisal, from Kampung Hutan Kuin, Machang, Kelantan, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash at KM399.2 of the highway, along the Bukit Besi-Ajil stretch, at around 12.53pm.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said preliminary investigations found that a Toyota Hilux, driven by a 37-year-old woman with a 45-year-old female passenger, was travelling from Kuantan, Pahang, to Felda Aring in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
The pair had been returning from the Event Enjoy Oktober programme in Kuantan as part of a convoy involving 10 motorcycles.
When they reached the location, the Toyota Hilux stopped on the emergency lane because one of the motorcycles in the convoy had broken down.
However, as the vehicle was about to resume its journey, the victim’s motorcycle, a Honda C100, struck its rear before catching fire, Sharudin said.
The impact killed the motorcyclist at the scene, while the driver and passenger of the Toyota Hilux escaped without injuries.
The victim’s body was taken to the forensic unit at Hulu Terengganu Hospital for a post-mortem.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
