A recyclable goods trader was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today with allegedly trafficking more than four kilograms of heroin.
M Davendran nodded in understanding after the charge was read out twice before Magistrate S Selvaranjini.
However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Davendran was accused of trafficking 4,625 grams of heroin along Jalan Tun Syed Barakbah, Padang Kota Lama, at about 5pm on July 17.
The charge was brought under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lau Shavin handled the prosecution, while Davendran was represented by lawyer Farah Hamizah Hasan Gani.
Lau did not offer bail and requested the court set a new mention date pending the completion of the chemical analysis report.
The court fixed Oct 26 for the next mention of the case and submission of the chemical report.
