Man Fatally Chainsaws Own Neck in Apartment Demolition Dispute

Date:

A shocking death occurred in Bishopstoke, UK, when 50-year-old David Phyall, a resident of a 1960s apartment scheduled for demolition, took his own life in a gruesome manner after refusing to vacate his home.

According to Mirror UK, Phyall had strongly resisted leaving despite being offered 11 alternative housing options by the housing authority, making him the only resident among 77 units to oppose the relocation plan. On the day of the incident, after consuming alcohol, he used a chainsaw to sever his own neck, resulting in a horrifying death that left the apartment’s living room covered in blood.

Phyall, who had a history of mental illness, was reported missing by his parents when they could not contact him. Police discovered the gruesome scene upon entering the apartment. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a complete neck severance caused by a chainsaw.

Forensic expert Simon Burge described the act as “extremely horrific” and suggested that Phyall may have intended to draw attention to what he perceived as an unfair situation. Despite the housing authority’s repeated attempts to relocate him and negotiate solutions, the tragedy could not be prevented.
