MBAS Raids Premises Allegedly Operating Unauthorised School For Rohingya Children

The Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) has raided a premises at the Shahab Perdana Commercial Complex after it was allegedly being used as an unauthorised school for Rohingya children.

Alor Setar Mayor Abdul Gafar Yahya said the operation was launched following claims circulating on social media that the industrial premises had been converted into a learning centre for members of the Rohingya community.

According to Abdul Gafar, the raid was carried out to verify the allegations and determine whether the premises complied with local regulations.

Initial investigations found that the unit had been rented out and was operating as a school, with 26 Rohingya children from the surrounding area attending classes. Authorities also discovered that each student was reportedly charged RM100 per month.

MBAS officers have recorded statements and obtained the details of both the property owner and the tenant as part of the ongoing investigation.

The council said the case will be investigated for the alleged misuse of an industrial premises. It will also be referred to the Kedah Education Department over the operation of a suspected unauthorised educational institution.

In addition, the matter has been referred to the Immigration Department to verify the immigration status of the foreign nationals involved.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing, with the relevant agencies expected to determine whether further enforcement action will be taken.
