A mechanic who spent more than a week in a coma after his motorcycle allegedly crashed while he was being chased by a pack of stray dogs is now facing the possibility of permanent brain damage.
Muhamad Shahrul Yuzzi Che Ahmad, 27, has since been discharged from hospital after undergoing brain surgery, but he continues to suffer from memory problems and requires constant supervision from his family.
His sister, Rozaini Che Ahmad, 43, said doctors informed the family that Muhamad Shahrul may have sustained permanent brain injuries and may never fully recover.
“Thankfully, he can now walk, talk and eat on his own, but his memory is still affected,” she said.
“Sometimes he remembers things, sometimes he forgets, and there are times when he talks incoherently.”
According to Rozaini, the incident occurred between midnight and 1am on July 13 in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Klang, while her brother was riding home from a shop.
She said he was believed to have been chased by a pack of stray dogs, causing him to lose control of his motorcycle before crashing.
The accident left him with severe head injuries and heavy bleeding, forcing doctors to perform emergency surgery.
“The doctors told us the bleeding in his brain was extensive and his chances of survival were only about 50 percent. The family had to make an immediate decision to allow the operation,” she said.
Following the surgery, Muhamad Shahrul was placed in a medically induced coma and only regained consciousness about a week later.
Rozaini said the incident has taken an emotional toll on the entire family, especially their elderly mother, who struggled to cope with seeing her youngest son in critical condition.
“Our mother would often cry and sit quietly beside his hospital bed. All of us siblings took turns caring for him throughout his treatment.”
She added that the family has also been affected financially and emotionally by the ordeal.
Rozaini urged the authorities to address the growing stray dog problem in the residential area to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
She revealed that she herself had previously been chased by four stray dogs while riding a motorcycle with her young child and a five-year-old family friend.
“Our neighbours have also experienced similar incidents. I hope the authorities take appropriate action so that no one else has to go through what my brother did,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Rozaini said the family is grateful that Muhamad Shahrul survived and is showing signs of recovery.
“The most important thing is that God has spared my brother’s life. We continue to pray that he will make a full recovery,” she added.
