Military Officer Arrested Over Alleged Drink-Driving Crash That Kills Bangladeshi Passenger On MEX

Date:

A 31-year-old military officer has been arrested after a suspected drunk driving incident that resulted in a fatal crash along the Maju Expressway (MEX) early this morning.

Police confirmed that a 22-year-old Bangladeshi passenger was killed, while four others, including the driver involved, sustained injuries in the two-vehicle collision at Km1.9 of the expressway heading from Salak Selatan towards Jalan Tun Razak.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said a breathalyser test on the Ford Fiesta driver showed alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.

The suspect has been detained and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers driving under the influence of alcohol causing death and carries a maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to RM100,000.

Preliminary findings suggest the Ford Fiesta veered into the opposite lane before colliding with a Perodua Alza e-hailing vehicle carrying passengers from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The fatal victim, seated in the middle row of the e-hailing car, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was injured and is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The e-hailing driver also sustained head injuries, while a female passenger in the Ford Fiesta was among those injured. The military officer involved suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalised.

Authorities confirmed that a urine test for drugs returned negative, while further investigations are ongoing, including the review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the crash site.
