Police have arrested the mother of two children who fell from the 12th floor of an apartment building in Tampoi, Johor, in a tragic incident that left one child dead and another critically injured.
Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the 37-year-old woman was detained at about noon on the day of the incident to assist with investigations.
The tragedy unfolded at around 8.27am at an apartment in Jalan Tampoi, within the Tampoi Industrial Area. Authorities said the victims, aged eight and 10, are believed to have either jumped or fallen from the 12th floor of the building.
One of the children was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
According to police, preliminary checks found that the woman has no prior criminal record. An initial drug screening test also returned a negative result.
Investigators have obtained a four-day remand order against the mother, allowing authorities to continue questioning her until June 11.
Police have also recorded statements from several witnesses who were present during the incident and reportedly saw the children fall or jump from the apartment block.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which relates to child abuse, neglect, abandonment or exposure of children to danger.
Authorities said the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the incident. Police believe the mother’s detention may help uncover the events that resulted in the heartbreaking loss and injuries suffered by the two children.
