Malaysia’s National Day celebrations on Aug 31 will proceed despite the worsening haze, although changes may be made to the scale or location of the event, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said today.
Fahmi said the final decision would be made following a meeting involving the Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), together with relevant ministries and agencies, this afternoon.
He said the authorities would assess the latest weather forecasts and haze conditions expected over the coming days before determining whether any adjustments were necessary.
“The celebrations will not be cancelled, but the scale or location may be changed. We will wait for the outcome of the KSN’s meeting this afternoon,” he said during his weekly press conference.
The 2026 National Day celebrations are scheduled to be held at Dataran Putrajaya from 7am on Aug 31, with thousands of participants and members of the public expected to attend.
Fahmi said the assessment would prioritise the health and safety of both participants and members of the public, particularly in view of the current air quality situation.
Several ministries and agencies are involved in the assessment, including those responsible for communications, natural resources and environmental sustainability, meteorology, education and health.
Any changes to the planned celebrations are expected to be based on the latest conditions and recommendations from the relevant authorities.
