Nurse Accidentally Cuts Baby’s Thumb During IV Treatment in India

Date:

A nurse accidentally cut the thumb of a one-and-a-half-month-old baby while preparing intravenous (IV) treatment at a hospital in India on December 24.

According to NDTV, the infant, who was being treated for pneumonia, was admitted to a ward at the Maharaja Yashwantrao (MYH) Government Hospital in Madhya Pradesh when the incident occurred.

The baby’s mother, Anjubai, noticed her son’s hand swelling before a nurse was called to examine him.

During the procedure, the nurse attempted to remove the adhesive tape securing the IV tube using scissors but accidentally severed the baby’s thumb.

The incident caused panic among the family and hospital staff, and the infant was immediately transferred to a specialist hospital for emergency surgery.

Plastic surgeons successfully reattached the severed thumb, and the baby is now in stable condition under close monitoring.

Following the incident, newskarnataka reported that the hospital administration has taken disciplinary action: the nurse involved has been suspended, while the salaries of three other nurses on duty at the time have been withheld for one month.

Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of the Medical College, confirmed the incident and said an investigation committee has been formed, tasked with submitting a report within 24 hours to determine the cause of the accident.

He added that the baby, who had previously been on a ventilator due to pneumonia, is stable after the surgery and that further action will be taken once the departmental investigation report is received.
