A van driver was killed while two others sustained minor injuries in a three-vehicle crash involving a container lorry in Sik, Kedah, on Monday morning.
The accident occurred at about 8am at Batu 34, Jalan Kuala Sin.
The two injured victims were the driver and a passenger of a Nissan X-Trail SUV. One of them was identified as Datin Norasima Md. Nowar, the wife of former Belantik assemblyman Datuk Mohd Tajuddin Abdullah.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations, Senior Fire Superintendent I Azhar Mohamad, said firefighters received an emergency call at 8.20am reporting a road accident involving three vehicles with one victim trapped.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found that the crash involved a container lorry, a Nissan X-Trail and a Toyota Hiace van.
Initial information from members of the public suggested the container lorry had lost control before toppling onto the van. The Nissan X-Trail then reportedly skidded and crashed into the lorry.
The two occupants of the SUV, an adult man and an adult woman, suffered minor injuries and had already been rescued by members of the public before firefighters arrived.
They were given initial treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team before being taken to Hospital Sik for further treatment.
The lorry driver was not injured.
Meanwhile, the van driver was trapped inside the badly damaged vehicle. Firefighters used special rescue equipment to extricate the victim, with assistance from the Yayasan Jariah Malaysia Volunteer Fire Brigade.
However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry medical personnel.
The body was later handed over to the police for further investigation.
