Passengers at KLIA 2 were seen rushing away after a power bank allegedly caught fire inside a backpack, with a video of the incident quickly going viral on social media.
The one-minute clip, reportedly filmed at 11.06am on July 26, shows smoke billowing from a backpack placed on the floor inside the terminal as nearby travellers back away to a safe distance.
A male employee from a nearby restaurant was then seen grabbing a fire extinguisher and spraying the backpack, covering it in white fire-extinguisher powder to put out the smoke.
After the situation was brought under control, several people carefully examined the contents of the backpack and identified a power bank as the suspected source of the smoke. One individual was later seen pouring water over the device in an apparent attempt to cool it down.
It is unclear whether anyone was injured in the incident, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has yet to issue an official statement at the time of writing.
The incident sparked concern online, with many netizens warning against purchasing cheap or low-quality power banks, saying the potential safety risks outweigh any savings.
Others questioned the apparent absence of airport personnel during the incident, with some calling for better emergency preparedness in the event of similar situations at the airport.
