PDRM Warns Against Misusing Police Identity For Commercial Gain

Date:

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has issued a stern warning against individuals, companies or organisations that misuse the names, logos, images of police officers or official identities of the force for commercial purposes without approval.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said PDRM’s official identity is an institutional asset that must be protected and should not be exploited to generate profit or create misleading impressions among the public.

He stressed that the presence of police personnel at external events should not be misunderstood as an endorsement, support or recognition of any product, service, investment or commercial activity.

“Members of the public are advised not to assume that a product or service has received official PDRM approval or support simply because PDRM personnel are involved in an event,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Khalid said the reminder was issued following attempts by certain parties to use the police force’s identity for promotional, marketing and advertising purposes.

He added that strict action would be taken against those who continue to misuse PDRM’s identity without permission or attempt to mislead consumers.

Such cases may be investigated under existing laws, including Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), depending on the facts and elements of the offence established during investigations.

Mohd Khalid reiterated that PDRM remains committed to protecting the integrity, credibility and official identity of the force while ensuring all external collaborations are carried out transparently, professionally and in accordance with the law.

He said the move was necessary to maintain public confidence and trust in the police institution.
