Police Arrest Man Linked To Viral Bridge Jumping Incident

Date:

A 25-year-old man who allegedly jumped from the Darul Hana Bridge last Wednesday has been arrested by police during a raid at Jalan Sekama here.

Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was detained at about 10pm yesterday.

He said initial investigations found that the incident took place on July 23 at around 10.30pm, when the suspect allegedly jumped from the bridge after being challenged by others.

“The suspect was also found to have seven previous criminal records and tested positive for drugs,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 336 of the Penal Code for committing an act that endangers human life or the personal safety of others through rash or negligent behaviour.

A video that went viral on Facebook last Thursday showed the suspect, wearing a white T-shirt, standing on the bridge before jumping into the river and later emerging from the water.

The incident sparked concern among members of the public, with many questioning the man’s safety following the dangerous act.

Public worries were also heightened after a crocodile was previously spotted near the bridge, although the reptile was later captured by a licensed crocodile hunter.

The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) later lodged a police report regarding the incident last Friday afternoon.
