Sarawak Premier and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the people of Sarawak are increasingly rejecting racial politics and instead want a government that can deliver development and improve their quality of life.
He said politics based on race and religion was no longer suitable in the current era driven by digital technology, adding that leadership should focus on knowledge, capability and fairness for all citizens regardless of background.
“Most people want development and a better life, not racial politics. In today’s digital era, what matters is wisdom, knowledge and ability, not race or religion,” he said during the PBB Central Zone Special Convention here today.
Abang Johari said the success of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in driving state development reflected PBB’s inclusive policies, which he claimed had benefited Sarawakians across different communities and political backgrounds.
The GPS chairman said the appointment of Sarawakians from various ethnic groups to lead Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) and other government agencies showed that the state administration prioritised qualifications and merit in selecting leaders.
He added that during GPS’ six years in government, various infrastructure projects involving bridges, roads, electricity supply and water facilities had been carried out across Sarawak, particularly in rural areas, benefiting people from all communities.
According to Abang Johari, these achievements demonstrated that PBB, as the backbone of GPS, was not merely making promises but implementing policies that brought progress and transformation to the state.
He also reminded party members not to be influenced by false information or attempts to create divisions within PBB, stressing that political stability was essential to continue Sarawak’s development agenda.
Abang Johari said PBB must continue developing a new generation of capable leaders to uphold Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and ensure the state remains on track towards achieving its development goals by 2030.
