Police have received two reports regarding a social media post allegedly containing remarks deemed insulting towards the Perlis royal institution in connection with the conferment of a state award.
Kangar District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the reports were lodged by two individuals aged between 35 and 40 at the Kangar Police Station at 9.30am and 9.53am on Friday.
He said both complainants claimed they came across a post uploaded by a Facebook user at about 11.36pm the previous night.
According to him, the post was related to the conferment of the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) award to an individual during the Perlis State Honours, Decorations and Medals Investiture Ceremony.
“Based on the complainants’ observations, the post indirectly questioned the decision to award the honour.
“The statement was interpreted as an insult or an act of belittling the award conferred by His Royal Highness the Raja of Perlis,” he said in a statement.
Yusharifuddin said the complainants believed the post could create a negative perception towards the Perlis royal institution and potentially lead to misunderstandings among the public.
He added that the post was also feared to affect social harmony, particularly as it involved sensitive issues related to religion, race and the royal institution, commonly referred to as the 3R issues.
The complainants submitted screenshots of the Facebook post to police as supporting evidence for the investigation.
Yusharifuddin said the owner of the Facebook account was believed to be a young man from or residing in Sungai Padang, Perlis.
He said police are currently conducting further investigations to verify the identity of the individual and appropriate action will be taken if any offence under existing laws is established.
