Police Shoot Driver With 16 Criminal Records In Head After Car Chase Near Johor Zoo

Date:

Police shot a 28-year-old man in the head after pursuing a Honda City driven dangerously near Johor Zoo in Johor Bahru, following a chase that ended with the car crashing into several vehicles.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the incident occurred along Jalan Gertak Merah on Thursday and involved the suspect and a 29-year-old female companion.

He said officers pursued the car for about one kilometre before opening fire after the vehicle collided with several public vehicles.

“Police fired two shots, with one hitting the male suspect in the head. The suspect and his companion were still inside the car when the shots were fired and did not act aggressively,” he said at a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters on Friday.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered seven plastic packets containing 373.80g of ecstasy powder, as well as 17 vape cartridges containing 6.8ml of ketamine liquid.

Ab Rahaman said the male suspect had 16 previous criminal records involving offences including drugs, robbery, rape and theft. He was also wanted in connection with a drug-related offence in Seri Alam.

The female suspect has one previous criminal record related to a drug offence.

Urine screening tests found both suspects positive for methamphetamine, he added.

The male suspect, who was shot during the incident, is now in stable condition and receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru.

Police will apply for a remand order against the female suspect, Ab Rahaman said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, and Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
