Selangor has postponed state and district-level National Sports Day (HSN) 2026 celebrations scheduled for October 10 due to worsening haze conditions.
Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Executive Councillor Mohd Najwan Halimi said the decision was made with public safety and health in mind, particularly those of participants, staff, volunteers, children and vulnerable groups.
He said the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in several areas across Selangor had reached unhealthy levels, posing potential health risks if physical activities continued.
“The state government’s position is clear: the safety and health of the people must take precedence over considerations to proceed with any programme,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Najwan said National Sports Day was intended to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, adding that the celebrations should not proceed under conditions that could jeopardise public well-being.
The events, originally scheduled for October 10, will be rescheduled to a new date, which will be announced later.
All implementing agencies, local authorities, district youth and sports offices, and event partners have been instructed to take note of the postponement and make the necessary arrangements.
Najwan also urged the public to refer to official announcements for updates on the new date.
He said the state government would continue monitoring the haze situation and take advice from the relevant authorities before deciding on further action.
He stressed that the postponement did not reflect any reduction in the state government’s commitment to sports, but was a responsible measure to ensure activities could be conducted safely without exposing the public to health risks.
