RM870 Salary Bank Driver Steals RM2.9 Million, Arrested After Splurging on New House

Date:

Struggling with financial hardship, a man in Central Java, Indonesia, decided to steal billions of rupiah from his own employer, Bank Jateng.

The suspect, identified as Anggun Tyasbodhi, 41, worked as a driver at the bank’s Wonogiri branch. Early last month, he was tasked with transporting a bank official to collect 6 billion rupiah (RM1.74 million) from Bank Indonesia’s Solo office, followed by 4 billion rupiah (RM1.16 million) from Bank Jateng’s Solo branch.

However, when the official briefly went to the restroom, Anggun seized the opportunity. He drove off in the bank’s Toyota Avanza, taking with him 10 billion rupiah (RM2.9 million) in cash. The official, caught off guard, initially thought Anggun was just moving the car.

After a week on the run, police arrested Anggun at a house in Panggang, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. Shockingly, investigators discovered he had used 400 million rupiah (RM116,000) of the stolen funds to buy a 140 million rupiah (RM40,600) house, as well as furniture, a car, and a motorcycle. The remaining 9.6 billion rupiah (RM2.78 million) was recovered as evidence.

Neighbors later revealed that Anggun often complained about his low salary of 3 million rupiah (RM870), saying it was not enough to support his wife and two children. He had worked as a bank driver for seven years, while his wife worked as an online motorcycle taxi driver to help make ends meet.
