A journey by two motorcyclists heading to the RXZ Members gathering in Terengganu ended in tragedy when both motorcycles caught fire following a crash at Kilometre 100 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near Politeknik Muadzam Shah on Thursday night.
Rompin district police chief Superintendent Sharif Bhai Sharif Mondoi said the incident occurred at about 10.10pm and involved a Yamaha RXZ and a Suzuki TXR150 travelling from Johor towards Terengganu.
Initial investigations found that the 41-year-old Yamaha RXZ rider is believed to have fallen onto the road upon reaching the location.
“A Suzuki TXR150 ridden by a 34-year-old man, who was travelling behind in the same direction, then collided with the motorcycle.
“As a result of the impact, both motorcycles were dragged along the road surface before catching fire. Both riders were rescued by members of the public,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Sharif Bhai said the Yamaha RXZ rider suffered injuries to his left hand as well as cuts to his body, hands and legs.
The Suzuki TXR150 rider, meanwhile, sustained head injuries and wounds to his hands, legs and body.
Both victims were taken to Muadzam Shah Hospital for emergency treatment and remain under medical care.
Police found that the accident occurred on a straight two-lane road with a flat and dry surface. The area was dark without street lights at the time, while weather conditions were reported to be clear.
Further investigation showed the crash happened after the Yamaha RXZ rider fell before being hit by the motorcycle approaching from behind.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
